1	Position. Jawaharlal Nehru Port (Port of Nhava Sheva) (1856'.71N, 7257'.40E) lies in the NE part of Mumbai Harbour, it is situated on the mainland SE of Elephanta Island .It is one of the green port of India.
2	Function. The port is the biggest container handling port in India. The port offers state of the art facilities for handling of container & liquid cargoes. Port also provides facilities for manual handling of dry/break bulk cargo.Mumbai's expanding growth and population pressure constrained the growth of the Mumbai port by the 1970s. This led to the establishment of the Nhava Sheva port across Mumbai Harbour in Navi Mumbai on the Konkan mainland. Nhava Sheva began operations in 1989, and most container traffic now flows through Nhava Sheva. The port was named as Jawaharlal Nehru Port and administered by Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT)

Limiting conditions

1	Controlling depth.There is a maintained depth of 12.8m in the approach channel SSE of Butcher Island. The passage to BMCT container Yard is dragged upto 13.1 m which is under construction.
2	Deepest and longestberth is Gateway Terminals India Pvt. Ltd. (GTI Berth) (712m with a maintained depth of 16.2 m).
3	Tidal levels.Mora (1854'.60N, 7255'.40E), about 2 miles SSW of Jawaharlal Nehru Port, has a mean spring range about 3.5m and a mean neap range about 1.6m. For more information see Indian Tide Table.
4	Density.During the monsoon season, the density varies with major fluctuations and the state of the tide.
5	Traffic.  About 2600 vessels visit the port annually and around 52.45 Million Tonnes cargo handled by the port. Mini bulk Cement carriers bound for Ulwa port and Offshore Supply Vessels calling ONGC Nhava Supply Base too transit through the harbour.

2	Approach and entry. The port is approached via Mumbai Harbour main channel and entered through a dredged channel S of Elephanta Island. 
3	Pilotage.Overall, control of shipping is vested in Mumbai Port. Pilot boarding area is same as for Mumbai Port . In addition to the information listed at 7.230, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust Control can be contacted on VHF Channel 13. For more details see Indian List of Radio Signals Volume 6.
4	Tugs join at the approach channel entrance.

Harbour

1	General layout.The berths are situated on reclaimed land at the NW end of Sheva Island (1856'.90N, 7257'.00E). A dredged channel, between 1 and 2 cables wide with a maintained depth of 12.8 m, gives access to the berths and to a JNP anchorage situated NE of Elephanta Island. JNP turning circle (inner circle), 500 m diameter, with a maintained depth of 12.8m, situated at the NE end of berthing area, as shown on the chart.
2	Around30 Container Freight Stations and Marine loading arms for handling Petroleum products, crude oil, LPG and Ammonia is available within the port.
3	Strom signals are displayed from the position 1856'.97N, 7257'.24E.
4	Development. The port is in the process of deepening the channel from 14mtrs to 15 meters. The JNPT is also planning to establish a port-based multi-product special economic zone, first-of-its-kind at a major port complex in the country. BMCT container Yard is under construction.

1	Landmarks.
		Dome (46 m in height) (1855'.86N, 7257'.50E).

2	Caution. The Harbour Master should be consulted for the accurate and latest depths in the channel.
3	Passage. From the vicinity of the turning basin situated 3 cables SSE of Butcher Light-beacon (1856'.88N, 7254'.32E) the channel, known locally as JNP Channel, is marked by light-buoys and leads E then NE to the berths; thence N to the inner turning basin and anchorage 
4	Leading lights:
		The alignment (083) of these lights leads the vessels through a buoyed dredged channel upto outer turning basin, then the vessels should follow the dredged channel to the berths or anchorage.
		Front light (1856'.82N, 7257'.50E).
		Rear light (325 m ENE from front).

1	Uran Light-beacon (1855'.74N, 7254'.03E) .

Berths

1.	Caution. The Harbour Master should be consulted for the accurate and latest depths at the berths.

2	Berths.	There are five principal berths in the port, each lies within a maintained depth of 16.2m. 

3	JNP container berth (1857'.30N, 7256'.90E), about 680m long,provides berthing facilities for three vessels. NSICT container berth (600 m in length) and NSIGT berths (300 m in length) lies E on the same quay. NSIGT container terminal borders the S bank of Nhava Creek.
4	GTI berths (1856'.90N, 7256'.50E), about 712 m long, provides about 500m of berthing for two bulk cargo vessels at its SW end and a service berth, with a depth of 10.7 m about 212m long at its NE end.

5	Liquid berths (1856'.70N, 7256'.30E), about 300 m long and 40 m width jetty with a facility to berth ships on both sides, for handling all grades of liquid cargo. It can accommodate vessels of maximum displacement 1,00,000 tonnes at outer berth & 45,000 tonnes at inner berth.The dredged depth of outer and inner berth is 16.2m and 12.2 m respectively. A light is situated at the centre of this jetty.
6	Shallow Water Berth  425 m long, for vessels up to 180m LOA and 10 m draught, lies between GTI and JNP container berths. The maintained depth alongside of the berth shown on the chart.
7	BPCL jetty, 400 m long, lies NE side of liquid berths, can also berth vessels on its inner and outer faces.
8	An ONGC jetty also lies in the NW end of Nhava (Hog Island). 

Anchorage

1	A JNP anchorage(1858'.54N, 7257'.06E), with a maintained depth of 12.8m, lies at the W end of Panvel Creek; the limits of the anchorage, which is marked by light-buoys, are shown on the chart.
	A mooring buoy also lies at the SW end of ONGC jetty.

3	Facility. Ambulance andemergency medical facilities for minor cases; Port hospital with small facilities is 6 km away.

5	Transportation.
		Nearest Airport. Mumbai (60km).

Small craft landings

1.	A landing jetty is situated close N of Sheva Beacon near the E of Liquid berth. The Panvel Creek, marked with buoys (lateral), flows into the northern part of JNPT channel about 2 miles NE of Sheva Island. The mouth of the creek is 6 cables wide and has depth of 3m. Small craft with local knowledge navigate in the creek. A good holding ground exists further up-creek.

2	A hover craft jetty lies about 1 miles SE of above jetty.Landing can be carried out at Raj Bandar jetty, about 1cables NNE of the S point of Elephanta Island.
