CURRENTS

The predominant current in the area covered by this cell is the South Equatorial Current which flows
westwards with mean rates of 1 knot. However to the north and south of this region currents are variable
and easterly sets can occur. East-going currents can also occur with persistent westerly winds between
December and April, or with a southerly shift of the Equatorial Counter-current. Currents may be irregular
around the island groups. Tropical storms can also produce local and temporary currents. For further
information see Admiralty Sailing Directions NP61 and Routeing Charts.
