CURRENTS: The Agulhas Current flows in a generally west-south-westerly direction roughly parallel to the coast and is strongest usually on or about the 200 metre depth contour. The northern edge of the current has a tendency to set towards the coast. Generally, the maximum rates are about 3 knots although, off East London, rates of up to 5 knots have been experienced. Also off East London, on shore sets of variable strength have been reported as the result of southerly gales. Fuller details appear in the Sailing Directions.
