CURRENTS

The major current in this vicinity is the Somali Current,
which is monsoonal in nature. From December to February
it flows in a south-westerly direction with rates of up
to 4 knots. From June to September the flow is north-easterly
with rates of up to 5 knots. Rates of 7 knots have been recorded.
In the periods between Monsoons currents are variable with abrupt
changes being experienced over short distances. Tropical cyclones
may also cause variation in the current patterns and high rates
can result. For further information consult Admiralty
Sailing Directions.
