Fishing
Many small fishing craft may be encountered along this coast.

Local weather
Winds from the W and NW pre-dominate from April to November; winds from the E and NE pre-dominate from December to March. In May and June very disturbed conditions, accompanied by a swell as high as 0.5 m 
Natural conditions

Currents
The current extinguished largely depends on the distance from the coast and the monsoon, which together with the circulations in Bay of Bengal. are the principal driving factors. The currents are often strong, variable in direction, abrupt, and unpredictable, especially during the periods of monsoon change

Caution
In January the sea is rough, vessels bound NE should remain well offshore and clear of angers along the SE coast of Sri Lanka. In march the sea is much calmer.
