FISHING STAKES
Mariners are cautioned that Fishing Stakes are liable to be met within depths of less than 20 metres covered by this chart, 
except for the SW Monsoon.

OMISSION OF NAVIGATIONAL AIDS AND MAINTAINED DEPTHS
Certain lights, buoys, berths, maintained depths, etc. have been omitted from this chart. For details, the large scale charts 
and the List of Lights should be consulted.

CURRENTS
The currents are of monsoonal origin, but tend to follow the trend of the coast. In December and January sets are 
north-westerly with rates of upto 1 knot. In July and August, when the SW Monsoon is well established, south easterly 
sets with rates of upto 2 knots are experienced. Exceptionally onshore sets of upto 1,5 knots are experienced during the 
NE Monsoon and upto 3 knots during the SW Monsoon. For further information see Sailing Directions.

Tidal streams 

Harbour. Tidal streams within the port of Bombay set, with rates of 3/4 to 3 kn, as follows.

East side of the harbour, in-going stream:

The stream sets NE abreast Karanja Island, setting more ENE after passing Karanja Beacon. Between Butcher Island and 
Elephanta Island the stream sets N, but towards Trombay Island it becomes NE.

West side of the harbour, in-going stream:

The stream sets NNE, from Sunk Rock to Cross Island with a rate of 2 kn; N of Tucker Beacon (18º 56'.l N, 72º 52'.5 E), 
where the stream separates, a branch of it turns N until abreast Mazagaon Dockyard; then the stream sets between NE and ENE 
to join the stream from the E side of the harbour N of Butcher Island.

East side of the harbour, out-going stream: 

The stream starts later here than on the W side of the harbour.

The stream sets SW, from the channel between Butcher Island and Elephanta Island, along the NW coast of Karanja Island; when 
abreast the entrance to Dharamtar Creek it sets WSW.
 
West side, of the harbour, out-going stream:

The stream at ordinary tides starts 30 to 35 minutes earlier than on the E side of the harbour; during strong spring tides 
the stream on the W side may start 40 minutes to 1 hour earlier. Inshore and near Indira Dock Wall, during the SW monsoon, 
the stream starts about 45 minutes before high water Bombay.

The stream sets SW from Trombay Island to Mazagaon Dockyard.

The stream sets SSW, from abreast Cross Island to W of Middle Ground Islet; in the middle of the harbour the set is S to SSW.
The set is between S and SSW, from Middle Ground Islet to Sunk Rock, but with the start of this stream the set off Sunk Rock 
is more W-going.

MAINTAINED DEPTHS
Maintained depths shown in the chart are likely to change due to siltation. Mariners are advised to contact Port authorities 
for latest information.

ANCHORING AND TRAWLING PROHIBITED
Ships are prohibited from anchoring and trawling in the area marked by ‘T’ shaped dashed lines due to the existence of gas 
pipelines and submarine cables. For details see also Indian Notices to Mariners Special Edition Notice No 13.

SUBMARINE CABLES
View serious consequences resulting from damage to submarine cables, vessel operators should take special care when 
navigating, anchoring, fishing, trawling, mining, dredging or engaging in any underwater operations in the vicinity. 
Where these cables may exist or have been reported to exist. In order to minimize the risk of such damage as much as 
possible, vessel should avoid any such underwater activities at a minimum distance of 0.5 NM on either side of submarine 
cables as shown on the chart. For details see also Indian Notices to Mariners Special Edition Notice No 13.

OIL AND GAS PIPELINES
Oil and gas pipelines contain flammable material under high pressure. Any ship damaging a pipeline could face an immediate 
fire hazard. Mariners are strongly advised not to anchor or trawl in the vicinity of pipelines.

PRECAUTIONARY AREA 
Mariners are warned that vessels including those entering and leaving Naval Dockyard, Indira Dock, JNPT channel and Oil Jetty 
are likely to cross in these areas within the main Mumbai approach channel.

CHANNELS 
Depths and Navigational Aids in proposed channels are liable to be changed. Mariners are advised to consult from port 
authorities prior entering into the channels. The proposed Tata Coal Berth channel, Thane Creek channel & Panvel channel 
are passing through pylon no. MP-71, MP-126 & MP-184 respectively.

The Mumbai Ports Channel is marked by 38 AIS and 06 V-AIS which are depicted within the chart limit.

ANCHORAGE AREA (BRAVO EAST AND WEST)
Smaller vessels may anchor in BRAVO ‘EAST’ and other vessels in BRAVO ‘WEST’ in accordance with the charted depths keeping 
clear off the submarine cables, foul ground, charted dangers and navigational aids.
